Water nausea, as it turns out, is actually a poorly understood phenomenon, so I spoke with Dr. Supriya Rao – which is quadruple certificate from board in internal medicine, gastroenterology, obesity medicine and lifestyle medicine – to explore more of these experiences.
As Rao says, there are many reasons why one might experience nausea after drinking water, and although it is more common in bariatric patients (especially those who gastric bypass), it could happen to anyone. One reason may be pre-existing dehydration. “Patients can have some kind of electrolyte imbalance because, with bypass patients, they’re not absorbing all the vitamins they normally would,” he told BuzzFeed.
“Or it could be the way the surgery is done, from the point of view of the nervous system. You are changing things in the gut, and it is possible that the nerve endings sent signals to make you feel nauseous, and that having something sweet makes it more pleasant. Sugar, salt and fat are tastier ingredients in general.”
